Church of the Holy Innocents

Location: Peel Forest
Denomination: Anglican
Built: 1869

If you drive down Rangitata Gorge rd, you will spot one of the most beautifully placed churches in New Zealand.
The land sits between the Rangitata river and the mount peel ranges and was donated by John Barton Acland in 1866. His wife, Emily, laid the corner stone the following year.
The consecration service was conducted by John Barton Acland’s father-in-law, the Right Reverend H.J.C Harper, the first bishop of Christchurch.
The name of the church, The Church of the Holy Innocents, is in remembrance of the first four children who were buried there.

The family hoped that this church would serve as a central point for the community.
Today, the Church is still open for visitors and is still looked after by the family.
