St Barnabas

Like many of New Zealand’s Anglican churches, St Barnabas Church in Woodend began as a wooden church, built in 1860. In 1928, the wooden structure was no longer fit for purpose and the current white concrete church was built in 1934. This church was designed by Christchurch architect Cecil Wood, who also designed St Paul’s Church in Tai Tapu (see our page on this church here).
The square, crenelated towers are distinctive features of the churches that were designed by Cecil, hence why there are a number of Canterbury churches with this particular feature.
