Holy Trinity
Location: Richmond
Denomination: Anglican
Built: 1872
On November of 1855 the Parish of Trinity Church was formed, meaning the congregation at Richmond were officially part of the Dioceses of Nelson, and therefore the Anglican Church. The first minister in Richmond was Henry Francis Butt, but the parish had a relatively quick turnover of ministers with seven different ministers in the parish’s first twenty years.
For a long time, the congregation at Richmond were meeting at the temporary Holy Trinity Church. During this time, the Reverend W.D.R Lewis complained that of the 450 professing believers in the area, only 95 of them regularly attended Sunday worship. The church building that stands on the hill today was only built in 1872, with the foundation stone being placed on the 9th of October 1871. Further extensions were made to the building in the mid-1980s.
