St Paul’s Community Church

Location: Murchison
Denomination: Anglican
Built: 1905

St Paul’s Anglican Church was the first church to be built in Murchison. Compared to the churches in the Nelson region, the first church in Murchison was build relatively late, in 1905. This is testament to the distance and difficult access to Murchison from the main settlement in Nelson.

Just like many of the early churches built in New Zealand during the time period, St Paul’s is built in Gothic Revival architecture. Key characteristics of this style of architecture includes the many pointed arches, which you can see in the style of the windows and doors, the steeply pitched roof and the decorative cross at the pinnacle of the church.
