St John’s Hira Church

Location: Hira
Denomination:
Anglican | Atawhai Hira Parish | Anglican Diocese of Nelson
Built:
1888

Tucked behind the cherry blossom trees and nestled inside a valley that is formerly but aptly named for the emotion that it brings, the St Johns Church in the Happy Valley of Hira a few years ago celebrated their 125 year anniversary.

Not much is known about this beautiful church aside from its construction in 1888 by a man the records describe as a gentleman farmer, Mr Hugh Martin. The records suggest that he must have done well enough in his farming of pigs and the trading of timber to be able to donate this land to the church. Perhaps it was because he wanted to the rest of the community and to be able to experience God’s happy valley too.

Either way this church is quite obviously beloved by the people who continually care for and attend it weekly.
