St Peters
Location: Havelock
Denomination: Anglican
Built: 1905
In 1864, gold was discovered close to Havelock beside the Wakamarina river. The small town exploded with prospectors and the first church in Havelock was built roughly 10 years later in 1872 to accommodate the increase in population. In 1907 this church was lost in a fire on New Year’s Eve. The current church building was designed by architect Frederick de Jersey Clere who designed over 100 churches throughout New Zealand (mostly in the lower North Island). The exterior is made from schist, sourced from the local area and was built in 1905.
